Objectives:
The Expert Group on Next Generation Networks (NGN) was established to:

• provide information to members of the Expert Group, and ASTAP generally, on the development of international and regional standards for NGN (based on the ASTAP goal "To enhance the level of expertise on standardization among the members and assists with upward and downward dissemination of information on standardization.");
• analyze the implications of NGN and the impact to our Region and, when appropriate, engage with stakeholders in the development of proposals for submission to the global NGN standardization bodies;
• Promote harmonization of NGN standards development in the Region, by sharing of information on national standards work as well as input into international work (based directly on the ASTAP goal “To harmonize standardization activities in the region”);
• share information and, if possible, develop guidelines for the implementation of packet-based networks for telephony, and other services;
• consider the SG questions. SG questions identified the issues which ASTAP member countries have faced. It should be studied and find the possible solutions.
